Australian Concerto and Vocal Competition
Opens Friday 24th July @ 6.00pm
Entries officially closed on Wednesday 3 June. With record entries it has been a challenge to work out a running schedule that allows for piano concertos, stage and sound check, and official accompanists enough time to rehearse as well as perform!
We can expect a brilliant five and a half days of wonderful singing and music making. Entries have exceeded our expectations in all departments with a fantastic representation of local North Queensland entrants as well as entrants from around Australia, with many returning to Australia to take part who are either studying overseas, such as violinist Linda Gilbert who is presently studying in Moscow, and violinist Josephine Chung touring with AYO.
Thirty-eight concertos for every orchestral instrument with the exception of percussion form part of the line up in the piano and instrumental sections, including favourites such as Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No 1 and his Violin Concerto as well as Dvorak’s Cello Concerto, Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini, Concerto de Aranjuez for Classical Guitar by Rodrigo to mention but a few.
We are especially thrilled to have a great line up in the school age sections, with the Young Performers Section including two entrants from Sydney. One of them, Benett Tsai, an eleven year old cellist is entered in both open age sections as well. This makes it a truly national competition, how exciting an opportunity for our local young North Queenslanders. The School Ensemble Section also has record entries and includes vocal, string, brass and woodwind ensembles presenting a wide selection of works from all genres.
Vocal sections cover works from 17th Century to the present day including Handel, Mozart, Verdi, Donizetti, Massenet, Bizet, and Rossini. The vocal section on Friday evening also includes songs in addition to arias from opera or oratorio, either folk songs or art songs, which always makes for an enjoyable evening for both singers and audience alike.

Fifteen out-of-town performers, some with their accompanists, have been successfully placed with generous local families. A big thank you to our local community who support us in this way. It is good to see a growing trend in out of town entries showing our reach is extending.
