2016 Adjudicators and Accompanists Announced

The Australian Concerto & Vocal Competition are proud to announce distinguished vocal and instrumental adjudicators for 2016.

Ms Barker is returning for her second season as adjudicator with us.

One of the finest Sopranos to emerge from Australia, Cheryl Barker has established a distinguished opera career throughout the UK, Europe, USA and Australasia. She has appeared in concert at London’s Barbican, Royal Albert Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Wigmore Hall, Halle Orchestra, Edinburgh/ Spoleto Festivals and toured for Musica Viva.  Recent roles include Madama Butterfly, Tosca, Governess/Miss Jessel (The Turn of the Screw), Desdemona (Otello) and Katya Kabanova.  Recordings include Puccini Arias, Pure Diva (Melba Recordings), Seduction & Persuasion, Beethoven 9 (ABC Classics), La bohème, Madama Butterfly/ Opera Australia, Madam Butterfly (Chandos), Madama Butterfly/ De Vlaamse Opera (Belgium/ Netherlands Television).

 

 

Spiros Rantos

 

Mr Spiros Rantos – Instrumental adjudicator

Spiros was born in Corfu, Greece and studied in Athens, Vienna, Austria and Bloomington USA with Prof. Melkus, Odnopossoff and Gulli. He has won prizes at International competitions in Colmar, France and Forte dei Marmi, Italy. In 1976 he came to Australia where he taught at USQ, VCA, and Melbourne University and recently retired from his position as Senior Lecturer at UQ. Spiros has recorded for Deutsche Gramophone, Harmonia Mundi, and Grevillea Records, over 65 LPs and for many Radio and TV stations around the world. He tours regularly in Australia and overseas.  In Australia he founded the “Rantos Collegium”, later renamed to “Melbourne Chamber Orchestra” and the “Brisbane Chamber Orchestra”. From 1986 to 1996 he also conducted the Melbourne Youth Orchestra, The MCAE Symphony orchestra and the Chamber Strings of Melbourne in numerous overseas tours and local performances.

 

We welcome the return of two ‘regular’ official professional accompanists, Rhodri Clarke from Melbourne, and Maryleigh Hand from Sydney.  This year Robert Manley from Brisbane also joins us for the first time.
