Competition Director Update

Entries closed at the start of June and there is a buzz of activity as the committee work to finalise details and schedule rehearsals.

If variety truly is the spice of life then this competition may be too hot to handle. We have instrumentalists across wind, brass, strings and piano; vocalists who will be singing in Italian, English, German and French. Our entrants themselves hail from Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and Western Australia as well as Singapore and United Kingdom.

Now we are quite accustomed to welcoming out-of-towners to our open aged sections, however this year it is exciting to note that the school aged section Young Performers Solo also has entrants from Brisbane, Singapore, Cairns and Melbourne!

Did you know that we actually have designated official accompanists located in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne? That way, rehearsals can get underway before the performers even arrive in Townsville.

Instrumental adjudicator Spiros Rantos (Brisbane) has his work cut out for him with a massive 20 full concerti to be performed throughout the Open Instrumental Preliminary Section!  There will be just 3 finalists chosen from the preliminary sessions to perform at Open Instrumental Finals Concert Tuesday July 26. 1st Prize is $4000 cash plus performance opportunities.

Vocal Adjudicator Cheryl Barker (Sydney) gladly returns to us this year and brings something new and exciting. Interviewed by our Competition director Katy Frewen-Lord, Cheryl will present According to the Professionals, a spellbinding, mythbusting conversation about life as a professional opera singer as well as tips on how to succeed in performance. This is a FREE event to be held in the atrium of the Civic Theatre.

The competition will be a jam-packed 5 days of music making. Many of our competitors are repeat offenders, as the opportunities to perform this level repertoire (eg a full concerto) are scant. The open sections have no age or geographic restrictions which makes this national competition unique. Plus, with valuable feedback from industry professionals and thousands of dollars in prizes available, why wouldn’t you return?
